Getting Your Soda Hard For Summer
MOST AUSTRALIANS will have never heard of “hard” or “spiked” seltzer, but in the United States this new type of alcoholic beverage is rapidly transforming the drinking habits of Americans.
In Australia seltzer is called soda, and hard seltzer ends up being and sode. Or gin and soda. Or vodka and soda. Pretty much whatever you like, and soda.
The industry predicts the trend is likely to take off here this summer, spurred on by the launch in Australia this week of America’s most popular seltzer brand.
Several Australian brewers have also jumped on the bandwagon with their own versions, and see the burgeoning alcoholic seltzer market as an opportunity similar to the craft beer and cider booms.
But we’re writing in Australia, and drinking in Australia, so we’re calling it Hard Soda
What is a Hard Soda?
The term “seltzer” is American for sparkling or soda water. So a “hard” seltzer is soda that has been spiked with alcohol, and usually flavoured with fruit.
Hence our revised drink category… Hard Soda
Some hard sodas are made with spirits such as vodka, gin or tequila.
