Home Distillers Share Tips on Cleaning a Half Keg
A recent post in Facebook’s Home Distillers Club got members talking after one distiller asked a straightforward but tricky question: how do you clean the inside of a half keg when the only opening is two inches wide?
The answers came quickly, and most pointed in the same direction.
This rum is sunshine in a bottle – all the punch you want, in true Bundy tradition!
The pressure washer was the runaway favourite. Many distillers said it was the obvious first move – push the wand through the opening, blast away the buildup, and flush it out.
The simplicity of it clearly appealed to the group.

Some members took it a step further. Tony, a distiller from regional Queensland, suggested following the pressure wash with a boil of water mixed with citric acid. In his experience, that combination does most of the heavy lifting before a final rinse leaves things clean as a whistle.
Others came at it from a different angle. John from the midwest described a more hands-on approach — a kitchen sterile cleaner paired with a drill-mounted brush and bar top grit. He said it took five years of buildup off and left the keg shining.

A couple of members suggested softer methods for stubborn grime. One recommended a carboy brush kept wet to let the residue soften over time, while another simply said to boil it and dump.
The discussion shows that when it comes to cleaning gear, home distillers are nothing if not resourceful — whether that means reaching for a pressure washer, mixing up a citric acid solution, or improvising with a drill and a brush.
Until next time… Happy Distilling!
Cheers
