Big Fermentation Vessels – Are They Worth It?

A post in Facebook’s Home Distillers Club caught plenty of attention recently after a member shared a photo of a large fermentation vessel that had just arrived from Amazon, explaining he was tired of filling multiple carboys and buckets every time he ran a batch.

The brand in question was Vevor, and opinions on it were warm. Several members said they’d had good experiences across a range of Vevor products – from stills to hoists to welding carts – and described the quality as solid entry-level commercial gear.

Nathan from Toowoomba put it plainly: it hadn’t let him down yet, across a surprisingly long list of purchases. Brett from Ballarat compared the brand to Harbor Freight – once it pays for itself, you’re playing with house money.

Not everyone was impressed. One top contributor kept it short: you get what you pay for. Another member flagged a practical issue, warning that the vessel leaks at the top unless you clamp it all the way around.

A separate thread ran through the comments around cost and value.

Steve from Shepparton mentioned picking up four 55-gallon food grade barrels for $20 each, while Dave pointed out that 60-gallon barrels regularly appear on marketplace for around $50.

The implied question was whether a shiny new Amazon purchase was really necessary when perfectly good fermenters were available cheaply secondhand.

Plenty of practical questions came in too – capacity, seals, whether it doubled as a pressure cooker, and whether a version with an infuser basket was available.

The discussion reflects a familiar tension in Facebook’s Home Distillers Club: the appeal of new gear versus the pragmatism of keeping costs down. For most home distillers, both camps have a point.

Until next time… Happy Distilling!

Cheers
